Frequently Asked Window Tint Questions

If there's something you're wondering about that isn't dealt with in the other Tech Center pages, Let Us Know and we'll try to address it here. This section is in it's early stages, but will be constantly growing as we continue adding to it and receiving input from our visitors.

What are these percentages people talk about when referring to how dark window tint is?

Measuring Visible Light Transmittance determines how dark your window tint is. Visible Light Transmittance is the ratio of the amount of total visible solar energy that is allowed to pass through a glazing system (tint) to the amount of total visible solar energy falling on the tint film. Value is usually expressed as a percent. So when someone says the tint is a 5 percent film, that means only 5 percent of the light that hits it passes though. This particular film would be extremely dark (so dark that it is referred to as Limo Tint). A common misconception is that the percentages refer to how much tint is in the film.

How dark can I tint my windows?

It depends on the state you live in. Each state has it's own set of rules and regulations. If you want to find out about the tint laws governing your state, see this State Tinting Laws page on the Solar Gard's site. For window tint information for our home state of Missouri, check out the Window Tinting Pamphlet issued by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Back To Top

Do I have to get real dark tint to keep my car cooler in the summer?

No. How visibly dark the tint is exhibits only one of the properties of the glazing in the film. The glazing also reduces glare and blocks UV rays and solar heat, irregardless of how dark the film is. Surprising, we have clear film we use that can keep your car as cool as 5% Limo Tint film can. Other than making my car look better, what other benefits do I get by having my windows tinted?

Your window tint can significantly reduce heat and eye-straining glare. It also acts like a sunscreen for your vehicle's interior, shielding against premature leather, vinyl and fabric fading and deterioration. Plus, it can increase your safety and security by holding kernels of broken glass together in the case of an accident. In fact, we even carry a special Security Film that makes braking out the windows on your vehicle extremely difficult, eliminating a thief's easiest access route. In addition to all this, darker tint can increase your privacy. All in all, besides adding an eminently cool look to your ride, there's lots of bonuses to window tint. Back To Top
